Another thing for your steppers try out 0.600 on the ref pot. I think you will find the steppers to be much happier and produce a much nicer tone.

I have 2 of them working just fine.

It is the same wattage as the stock ToM supply weights at least twice as much.

Somewhat to my surprise, I'm still using the stock MBI power supply in what must be on of the earliest Thing-O-Matics. After all my (admittedly extensive) hackage to the TOM's electronics, it behaves exactly like a power supply should!

One mod that really helped: an external minimum load. The stock supply seems much more sensitive to external load variations than those aftermarket supplies and probably has an (unspecified) minimum load requirement that the TOM electronics doesn't satisfy.

So it's not so much that the original supply was junk, it's more that the whole collection of parts didn't play nicely together…
