The kits, unless changed, come with a heating element which is a square flat circuit board covered with copper traces. This board, depending on your choice during the assembly of your bot, is built into the heated build platform or the automated build platform.

You do not need to buy more except maybe the aluminum build plate. I do not think that is included yet. That is a very important noninclusive upgrade. It is hard, flat, hides attachment hardware and evenly distributes heat.

As to you question.
Your new kit will include all the latest Makerbot innovations. Relax about buying for now and just enjoy the anxiousness of soon joining your spot in history. I'm not joking. Your new experiences will likely be some of the more frustrating, fun and wholesome things you'll have to play with - Adult and child alike. :-).

After you build and tune your bot if you're not satisfied with whatever feature - you'll probably start looking to soup up you ride. Uh, er bot. You'll dream to build, buy, print, copy, alter, innovate,….

As said earlier by bstoff, you can build both from the kit.
I'd suggest to buy/make the aluminium build plate for the beginning and start with heated build platform with an aluminium plate and kapton tape on it.
I'ts much easier to start with. I don't mean the building of the platform. But you will most definitely have problems with warping of larger objects when you start and on HBP you can find the solution easier and than take the knowledge and use it on the ABP.
Later on if you get to "know your printer" you can easily switch to ABP (either disassemble the HBP and use those parts or buy new ones).

Both ABP and HBP has it's advantages.
Generaly (from my point of view) the ABP is good if you need to make smaller things and you need more not so precise pieces of one thing.
The HBP is better if you want larger or more precise prints.

On thingiverse you can find some "quick platform change upgrades" in order to be able to interchange them quickly. This is really useful upgrade after you buy another "heating PCB" so you can have both ABP and HBP at one time. But I think there is no need to buy it now. The ToM kit is more than sufficient to start, I'd say enjoy it and start thinking about the second build platform after you "recover" from the expense you made because of the ToM.
